New York Expands Crossbow Hunting: What You Need to Know

Big news for New York hunters — the governor has officially passed new regulations making crossbows fully inclusive for the hunting season. Starting October 1, hunters across the state will be able to use either a crossbow or a vertical bow throughout the archery season and during the dedicated crossbow season, which now spans a little over six weeks.

This change opens the door for more hunters to experience the versatility and accessibility of crossbow hunting. But before you grab your gear and head into the woods, there’s one important requirement you need to know about.

Bowhunter Education Requirement

To legally hunt with a crossbow in New York, hunters must complete a Bowhunter Education Course.

• You can connect with your local officials or check with Cornell Cooperative Extension for details on how to take the course.

• Some courses may be available online, but availability can vary by county.

• Proof of completion is required before you can legally hunt with a crossbow.
